Protocol Assistant

SALARY:                Ordinarily Resident: R.O. 7,062 per annum for a 40-hour week
                                    (Position Grade: FSN-7)

The American Embassy in Muscat is seeking an individual for the position of Protocol Assistant.

BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION
Serves as personal assistant on protocol matters to the Ambassador, the DCM, and other mission officials as directed.  Provides protocol liaison with Omani government and other Diplomatic Missions.  Provides translation service to the Executive Office, duty officer, and is back-up translator in the absence of the embassy translator. Provides executive event management, and advises Embassy security office on Chief of Mission and spouse events. Maintain the Embassy’s Contact Database, focusing on the Ambassador’s and Executive Office Contacts to ensure it is accurate and up-to-date. Trains incoming embassy personnel who will be responsible for the up-keep of their section’s contacts.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
NOTE:     All applicants must address each selection criterion detailed below with specific and comprehensive information supporting each item.

  • An Associate degree or a minimum of two years of higher education in Administration/Management is required. 
  • Minimum of three years of progressively responsible secretarial, administrative assistant and/or related work required.
  • Level 4 (Fluency) English and Level 4 (Fluency) Arabic languages are required in speaking, reading and writing.  Ability to provide accurate, clear translations of invitations and documents.
  • Proficiency in internet and computer usage, in particular, mail merge and Microsoft applications.
  • Ability to develop and maintain mid to high level contacts with Omani Government officials (up to Ministerial Level), the Diplomatic Corps, and business leaders and to identify and nurture relationships that will help achieve Mission goals.
  • Must have understanding of Omani culture, customs and traditions and be familiar with Western and Omani protocol procedures, and ability to obtain knowledge of Omani Government protocol guidelines required, as well as knowledge of etiquette and social mores of Oman and the United States.
An Associate degree or a minimum of two years of higher education in Administration/Management is required.
