Relaunching Talks Is First Step in Middle East Peace Process November 10, 2009 Washington — The critical first step in the Middle East peace process is to relaunch negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis without preconditions, says U.S. Under Secretary of State William Burns. “That emphatically does not mean starting from scratch; it means building on previous agreements, resolving the core issues of the conflict, and settling it once and for all,” Burns said in a speech at the Washington-based Middle East Institute November 10. First Lady Honors After-School Arts Projects That Inspire Youth November 4, 2009 Washington — In Campeche, Mexico, children with Down syndrome attend two dance workshops each week to learn traditional and contemporary dances at La Chácara Children’s Culture Center. In China’s Sichuan province, children from low-income families train in opera, dance and the visual arts at Green Path of Art, which provides its students with academic and financial assistance. Ambassador and Mrs. Schmierer Visit AMIDEAST October 5, 2009 Muscat - On Monday, October 5, Ambassador Richard J. Schmierer, accompanied by Mrs. Schmierer, made an introductory visit to AMIDEAST, the U.S. educational organization that is a major partner with the U.S. Embassy in a range of projects promoting exchanges between the Sultanate and the United States, as well as helping students in Oman learn more about U.S. higher education. They were met by AMIDEAST Oman’s Country Director, Sarah M. Jackson, toured the facility, and had the chance to learn more about the work the Embassy and AMIDEAST are carrying out together. (more)

Embassy Celebrates at Ramadan Reception September 15, 2009Muscat - On Tuesday, September 15, the U.S. Embassy hosted a range of leading Omani and expatriate businesspeople, officials, academics, members of the diplomatic corps, and other friends at a reception marking the month of Ramadan. Hosted by Deputy Chief of Mission L. Victor Hurtado and held at Muscat’s beautiful and historic Bait al Zubair Museum, the event was also an opportunity for the Embassy’s guests to meet Ambassador-designate and Mrs. Richard J. Schmierer, who arrived in Oman on September 14.
U.S. Embassy Announces Leadership Training Opportunity September 19, 2009The U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce a fellowship opportunity offered by the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI), a program of the U.S. Department of State. Applications are now being accepted for candidates for the Leaders for Democracy Fellowship Program, which will provide young leaders from the Middle East and North Africa with the opportunity to complete both academic coursework and professional experience in the United States in subjects including communication, leadership, and civil society. The fellowship will cover international and domestic travel, health insurance, housing, and a moderate living stipend. (more)
Internet Visa Fraud August 16, 2009 MUSCAT - Reports of fraudulent emails, websites, and print advertisements offering visa services are on the rise. The U.S. Embassy in Muscat reminds both citizens and residents of Oman to use caution when working with non-government entities to apply for a visa to the United States. Many non-government websites offer legitimate services to assist individuals in applying for a visa, but some illegitimate entities claim to provide “visa services” as a cover for scams or identity theft. Student Leaders Depart for Summer Program June 23, 2009 Muscat -- The U.S. Embassy's Public Affairs office hosted a pre-departure orientation on June 22 for seven Omani college students who will be participating in the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) Study of the U.S. Institutes for Student Leaders. The exchange program will take them to the United States for six weeks beginning June 28 to understand more about American culture and learn leadership skills. (more)
The U.S. Embassy Muscat announces The Fulbright Visiting Scholar ProgramThe Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program awards grants to Omani scholars to conduct research, lecture or to pursue combined lecturing and research in the United States. Most grants are awarded for a period of 3-10 months. Grants should not be for periods of less than 3 months or more than 10 months. (more)
The U.S. Embassy Announces The Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) ProgramThe Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program provides opportunities for young Omani teachers of English to refine their teaching skills, increase their English language proficiency, and extend their knowledge of the cultures and customs of the United States. Each FLTA Fellow will spend one year at a U.S. university where he/she will teach Arabic while enrolling in at least two U.S. studies or teaching methodology classes each semester. (more)
